Applying for Competitive Courses
If you are considering applying to universities like Oxford and Cambridge, or you are thinking about applying for subjects like Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Science, it is important to be prepared. You will need to know how applying for these courses differs from other undergraduate courses. You should also be aware of the help that is provided by the school, through the Aim High Programme.
What Makes These Applications Different?
These applications often have a lower chance of success, due to the high number of applications per place. That means you will need to stand out, as a candidate, but may also be required to complete different application tasks to your peers. These can include early application dates; the need for a wide range of academic engagement before applying; entrance tests and subject interviews.
What is the Aim High Programme?
Open to any students considering competitive entry, the Aim High programme is designed to give information and support with university applications. Tutor sessions are run through Year 11, 12, and 13 that encourage students to think about entry for different courses, whilst encouraging super-curricular activities that will help with the final application process. In Year 13, help and advice is provided for those trying to meet the competitive entry deadline. This includes, but is not limited to, bespoke personal statement feedback; entrance exam guidance; interview preparation and support with queries regarding applications.
