School Uniform

The school uniform at BFS is designed to be smart as well as practical. Students are expected to wear school uniform while at school and adhere to the dress code.

We know that our students take pride in their uniform and that feeling good about what they wear to school helps them be at their best. You can find full details of our uniform and sportswear policies below and in the student handbooks for Years 7-11.

Uniform

Compulsory (unless shown as optional):

Daywear - Boys

  1. Blazer: Navy blue blazer with Bristol Free School badge on the pocket (fitted and straight-cut available).
  2. Shirt: Pale blue, long or short sleeved with a staff collar and top button done up, worn with a Bristol Free School tie. They must always be tucked in.
  3. Tie: Navy blue with red detail standard school style. Tie must be worn appropriately and showing a minimum of 15 red stripes.
  4. Jumper (optional): Navy blue V-neck long sleeve with BFS logo. Navy blue jumper with no logos also allowed.
  5. School trousers: Charcoal straight leg school trousers (not light grey or black) No skinny trousers or jean-type trousers.
  6. Socks: Black or charcoal with no patterns with trousers.
  7. Shoes: Traditional flat, black polishable shoes – lace up shoes to have black laces.

Daywear Girls

  1. Blazer: Navy blue blazer with Bristol Free School badge on the pocket (fitted and straight-cut available).
  2. School trousers or school skirt: Charcoal straight leg school trousers (not light grey or black) or a charcoal grey skirt. The skirt should be worn no higher than 5cm above the knee with either tights or socks. When tights are worn with skirts, they should be opaque black or navy, without any pattern. No skinny trousers or tight skirts, tracksuit bottoms, leggings, jeans or jean-type trousers. See examples below for clarification. 
  3. Shirt: Pale blue, long or short sleeved with a staff collar and top button done up, worn with a Bristol Free School tie. They must always be tucked in.
  4. Tie: Navy blue with red detail standard school style. Tie must be worn appropriately and showing a minimum of 15 red stripes.
  5. Jumper (optional): Navy blue V-neck long sleeve with BFS logo. Navy blue jumper with no logos also allowed.
  6. Headscarf (optional): Navy blue (optional).
  7. Socks or tights: Black or charcoal with no patterns with trousers. Short white or knee length charcoal with skirts. Plain/neutral or black tights, neutral trainer socks or no socks/tights at all.
  8. Footwear: Black polishable low heeled shoes. 

To ensure consistent high uniform standards, senior staff will conduct checks at the school gate. Uniform breaches will be followed up through the school’s behaviour system. In extreme circumstances, students may be sent home to correct their uniform, before being allowed into their lessons.

PE Kit

Compulsory:

  1.  Top - Navy BFS polo shirt/plain navy sports t-shirt (no logos)
  2. Bottoms - Plain navy shorts/skort/sports leggings/joggers (no logos)
  3. Socks - Plain navy knee length
  4. Trainers - Sports trainers with non-marking sole
  5. Gum shield (KS3)
  6. Shin pads (KS3)
  7. Football boots (KS3)

Long hair must be tied back and no jewellery is permitted (including earrings/watches).

Alternative items:

  1. BFS PE Sports hoody/sports leaders hoody
  2. BFS quarter zip sweatshirt
  3. Plain navy crew neck sweatshirt
  4. Non-branded PE kit must NOT include hoodies or any garments with zips.
 
Coats and Bags 
  • Coat: Sensible winter coat in plain colour without overt logos. No denim or leather. No extreme commercial logos. No hooded tops. Coats are not a replacement for blazers and should only be worn outside, not inside the buildings.
  • School bag: Rucksacks only. Should be able to carry a minimum equivalent of 2 A4 ring-binder files, pencil case and water bottle. 
 
Buying Uniform and Sportswear

BFS branded uniform and sportswear is available to buy from Monkhouse. Some unbranded elements of our school uniform can be bought from Monkhouse or other retailers. These are clearly marked on our uniform list.

Please make sure you place your order with Monkhouse in plenty of time. They suggest June/July for the new school year.

You can also buy good quality, second-hand uniform at sales held regularly at school. Please look out for details in our newsletters.

Hair, Jewellery and Make-up
  • Hair: Standard school style. Colour must be natural shade. No extremes in hair dye or style.
  • Jewellery: Watch (optional). Maximum of one plain silver or gold stud (of no more than 5mm diameter) per earlobe.  No rings, necklaces, chains or bracelets, including charity bands.  No other forms of body piercing.
  • Make-up: Discreet foundation is permitted. No nail varnish, lip stick, artificial nails, eye shadow, mascara or heavy black lines etc.

Students will need the following basic equipment each day:

  1. Blue/black pen and spares
  2. Red pen - with a spare 
  3. Pencil case.
  4. Reading book 
  5. 2 Pencils and a sharpener.
  6. Eraser.
  7. 30cm ruler.
  8. Maths compass
  9. A protractor.
  10. A glue stick.
  11. Calculator (preferably Casio 83GTX or 85GTX).

All items of uniform should be clearly named.
