Stephanie Norton - Careers Leader

My name is Stephanie Norton, and I have been the Careers Leader at BFS since September 2023. During my first year in the role, I successfully completed the accredited Careers Leader Qualification.

I have been teaching Psychology and Sociology at BFS since 2017 and have also held the position of Deputy Head of Sixth Form for most of that time. I am incredibly proud to lead our thriving careers programme and see it as both a joy and a privilege to support our students as they make important decisions about their futures.

My aim is to ensure that all students from Year 7 to Year 13 benefit from a well-planned, spiral careers curriculum. This curriculum is designed to give them the knowledge, skills, and experiences they need to make informed career choices and feel confident as they prepare to enter the world of work.

Maggie Smith - Careers Advisor

My name is Maggie Smith, and I joined Bristol Free School in October 2025 as the Careers Advisor and Administrator. I bring many years of experience working with young people in a variety of settings, alongside a Level 6 Diploma in Careers Advice.

My journey into careers guidance began after receiving poor careers advice myself as a student, which left me uncertain about my next steps. After completing my BSc in Psychology in 2009, I worked in the events sector before deciding to pursue my passion for supporting children and young people. This led me to roles with The Prince’s Trust, Learning Partnership West, and The Restore Trust, where I worked with young people and adults facing a wide range of challenges. These experiences strengthened both my commitment to meaningful guidance and my expertise within the careers profession.

At BFS, I am thoroughly enjoying supporting our students, particularly those in Year 11 and Year 13, as they prepare for their next steps. I also work with younger year groups when needed and collaborate with a wide range of local employers to coordinate work experience opportunities and our weekly Employer Talks.

My aim is to ensure that all students receive high‑quality, accessible, and inspiring careers guidance. I am passionate about helping every young person feel confident in their choices and supported as they move toward their future pathways.
