Art Overview

Term 1: Natural Forms

Students will begin this unit with teacher led exploratory work that will give them confidence in basic skills and approaches when working from life and their imagination.

The internal structure and external patterns of natural forms have inspired artists, designers and craftspeople for centuries and continues to be a major source of inspiration for contemporary art and design.

Students investigate a wide range of natural forms through recording in different media, processes and techniques before developing and refining a final response.

Term 2: Natural Forms; Recording

Students may use sketchbooks and a variety of prepared surfaces on which to record their observations, ideas, feelings and insights.They may work in a range of sizes and styles using a selection of media, techniques and materials.Students are introduced to critical and contextual material in order to understand a variety of recording styles and the range of techniques used in historical and contemporary art and design practice.

Term 3: Natural Forms; Development

Students will be expected to use their recordings and research to develop a range of ideas, culminating in a personal and meaningful artistic response. Media to be used is a personal choice but students will be encouraged to play to their strengths whether it be working in

2D or 3D.

Students will be assessed on their work as a portfolio against the four assessment objectives

Term 4: Urban Life/Portraiture and Identity

Students will have the opportunity to choose from Urban Life or Portraiture and Identity.For either topic students will study from and respond to the work of suggested artists as well as exploring perspective and proportion.Within their chosen theme students

need to find their own angle by exploring the topic in depth; through

initial recordings from direct observation and imagination.They should then proceed to investigate their theme by recording in a range of

media, processes and techniques.Students will be encouraged to create a range of both 2D and 3D responses.

Term 5 : Urban Life/Portraiture and Identity Development
