Physical Education Overview

Term 1: Invasion Games 1

Students will spend three lessons on rugby and three lessons on netball.

The skills learned will be:

passing, receiving, footwork, handling, dodging, marking, sidestepping, intercepting, tackling.

Students will develop their transferable core skills in team games across rugby and netball. Students will also develop their team work, communication and leadership skills.

The term will end with an inter-house competition.

These are the sports which link with extra-curricular provision. All students are encouraged to attend all EC opportunities.

Students will be assessed in team activities (in line with the 1-9 level ladder).

Term 2: Sports Hall Athletics/Adventurous Activities

Sports Hall athletics:

Students will have three sessions of Sports Hall athletics. Students will have the opportunity be assessed in an individual sport. Students will learn about the different fitness components that benefit each event, as well as the technique and rules for each activity.

Adventurous Activities:

In these lessons students will develop their leadership, problem solving, teamwork and listening skills. Students will be working with others in their group to complete tasks.

Students will be assessed in individual activities (in line with the 1-9 level ladder).

Term 3: Invasion Games 2

Invasion Games 2:

Students will have three lessons of football and three lessons of basketball.

Students will develop their passing, receiving, dribbling, moving, intercepting, crossing and shooting skills

Students will develop their transferable core skills in the team games of football and basketball. Students will further refine their team work, communication and leadership skills.

The final session will be an inter-house competition.

Football is offered as an extra-curricular sport in terms 3 and 4. All students are encouraged to attend EC opportunities.

Term 4: Accurate Replication/Outdoor Fitness

Accurate replication

Students will develop their basic gymnastic actions (individual balances, travelling movements) and movement skills, and incorporate into floor routines. Students will develop basic flight skills.

Outdoor fitness:

During Mock 2 there is no sports hall availability.

Outdoor fitness will consist of different training methods (circuit/interval/fartlek) and cross-country running.

Term 5: Athletics

Athletics

Students will develop their ability to perform a variety of track and field events, learning the correct technique through demonstration and conditioned practices. Students will begin to learn the basic rules and scoring methods for events.

Students will be assessed in individual activities (in line with the 1-9 level ladder).

Term 6: Striking & Fielding/Tennis

Short tennis

Students will develop their ability to serve, rally and score in mini tennis (smaller courts, shorter rackets and softer balls).

Striking and Fielding:

Students will play a variety of fielding teams (rounders, cricket, softball and modified games). The focus will be on basic fielding skills and how they can be transferred across activities. Students will learn basic rules of these sports.

These units link with fixtures during this term.
