Design Technology — Year 9

Design Technology Overview

Rotation C: Product Design

Students will continue to develop their knowledge of materials by manufacturing a candle holder from a variety of metal. Students will apply their scientific knowledge to identify the physical and working properties of different metals and experiment with a range of different manufacturing techniques and processes including, scroll forming, annealing and riveting. Students will learn about the different scale of productions that are used commercially to manufacture products, along with the health and safety considerations that need to be assessed. Understanding the primary sources of metals will allow students to consider the environmental impact of our material choices.

Students will be assessed through a short question-based assessment half way through the module, followed by final assessment of the product and written evaluation at the end of the rotation.
