Religion & Philosophy Overview

Term 1: Hinduism

In this unit students are introduced to the first of the largest Indian religious traditions, Hinduism, which then forms the basis of understanding for the following two units of Buddhism and Sikhism.

Term 2: Buddhism

This unit builds on students' knowledge of Hinduism from last term and develops their understanding of Indian religious traditions by introducing students to Buddhism.

Term 3: Sikhism

Here we will study the final of the three largest religious traditions of India building on prior knowledge of Hindu and Buddhist thought by introducing students to the key religious beliefs and practices of Sikhism.

Term 4: What role does Eastern religion play in society, locally, nationally and globally?

Building on from the three largest Eastern religions, this unit allows students to apply previously learnt concepts to the smaller, lesser known religious groups and faiths. In our bid to further decolonise the curriculum, this allows for greater representation of a variety of Central, East and South Asian religious beliefs and practices.

Term 5: What does it mean to be human, and Humanism

Students will be introduced to the non-religious worldview of Humanism in this unit which will give them a valuable insight into alternative views and outlooks.

Term 6: Judaism

In order to prepare students for the start of their Short Course GCSE studies in Year 9 with the in depth study of Christianity and Islam, here students will be introduced to Judaism giving them important background knowledge to the other Abraham faiths.
