PSHCE Overview

Term 1: Being Me in My World: Transition to Secondary School

In this unit students will follow a Jigsaw scheme of work including lessons on transition to secondary school, personal identity

factors, influencing identity, and dealing with positive and negative feedback.

Develop the individual:

Students will consider and discover how they fit into the world around them and this unit will assist them in dealing with the big changes in life they're experiencing.

Create a supportive community:

This unit will help the tutor group bond over their experiences, as this is the first PSHE unit they will experience as a new class at secondary school. It will help them to form a supportive learning community.

Term 2: Identity, Community and Diversity

Students will start by considering what makes up their own identity, and how this is affected by the different communities they belong to. They will learn about different aspects of diversity, including ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and differences in personality and ideology. The unit finishes with a project in which students will plan a festival that celebrates community and diversity.

The students will reflect on their own identities and gain a much better understanding of others.

By better understanding each other and their differences, students will be able to form a more supportive learning community.

Term 3: Emotional Health and Wellbeing

In this unit students will learn about emotional health and wellbeing. They will look at important issues such as stress, online safety and dealing with change, as well as the importance of sleep and the use of mindfulness in maintaining positive mental health.

Students will reflect on their emotions and improve their emotional literacy developing their understanding of themselves.

Create a supportive community:

By better understanding each other's emotions and emotional health, students will be better placed to support each other.

Term 4: Relationships: Would I be me without my relationships? This unit includes FGM.

Students will explore the changing web of friendship, developing friendships, the changing wall of support, external factors in relationships, assertiveness in relationships, and the changing role of families.

Develop the individual:

Students will learn about how their relationships will change throughout their lives, allowing them to be better equipped to deal with this and access support.

Create a supportive community:

As a learning community, students will improve their relationships with each other as they will learn about important strategies to build on relationships. They will also become a better support network for each other as a result of their understanding of the changing web of friendships.

Term 5: Health and Wellbeing: Puberty and Change

Students will develop an understanding of how puberty can change personal hygiene needs, and learn about the different products and methods that can help maintain good personal hygiene. They will develop an appreciation that feelings and emotions can change during puberty, and how to deal with this change. They will also learn about the changes that take place to the body during puberty.

In this unit students will also learning about female genital mutilation (FGM) and breast ironing practices.

Develop the individual:

This unit develops the individual and their understanding of their own bodily changes and how to manage them.

Create a supportive community:

Students will be better equipped to support each other throughout puberty, which is often a difficult and stressful time for young people. They will also develop an important understanding of FGM and breast ironing practices in order to help protect our community.

Term 6: Careers - Introduction to the World of Work

In this unit students will explore the different sectors of career pathways and learn about different job roles.

Students will be introduced to the idea of working life after school and be encouraged to think about the huge range of possibilities open to them.
