Physical Education Overview

Term 1: Invasion Games 1

Rugby/Netball:

Students will build on their basic technique for the five core skills to develop more advanced technique through the use of set drills, conditioned games and full versions of the game. Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of rules, tactics and strategies.

Sport education: A model that provides a particular focus on participation through providing opportunities for pupils of all abilities to achieve in a variety of roles associated with competitive and non-competitive sports). Students will develop their sportsmanship and etiquette to ensure a positive learning environment.

These are also extra-curricular sports for this term. All students are encouraged to participate in EC opportunities.

Students will be assessed in team activities (in line with the 1-9 level ladder).

Term 2: Badminton/Outdoor Fitness

Badminton - Students will further develop their badminton core skills. Students will develop methods of outwitting opponents.

1. Service – high, low, flick (forehand or backhand).

2. Overhead – clear, drop (forehand and backhand where appropriate).

3. Underarm – clear, drive, drop (forehand and backhand where appropriate).

4. Net play.

5. Smash.

Outdoor Fitness:

Students will participate in cross country as well as developing fitness through a variety of outdoor training methods.

Students will be assessed in individual activities (in line with the 1-9 level ladder).

Term 3: Invasion Games 2

Basketball/football:

Term 4: Basketball/Adventurous Activities

Basketball:

Students will refine the core skills in basketball and develop their ability to outwit the opposition through a greater understanding of tactical and strategic play.

Adventurous Activities:

Students will work as part of a team to complete tasks. Students will further develop their communication, teamwork, problem solving and leadership skills.

Students will be assessed in team activities (in line with the 1-9 level ladder).

Term 5: Athletics

Athletics:

Students further develop their athletics skills from Y7 and Y8. Some students will also add triple jump and discus (not completed in Y7 and Y8).

Track:

1. Starts/finishes.

2. Arm action – effectiveness and consistency.

3. Leg action to create appropriate pace – consistency and/or change of pace.

Jumps:

1. Run-up/speed.

2. Take-off.

3. Flight and landing.

Throws:

1. Grip, stance and preparation to throw.

2. Movement into throwing action.

3. Release, follow-through and recovery.

Students will be assessed in individual activities (in line with the 1-9 level ladder).

Term 6 : Striking and fielding / Tennis

Tennis - Students will complete the transition to full court tennis, using the skills and techniques, they have developed to successfully outwit opponents in both singles and doubles play.

1. Service – forehand and backhand (with and without spin as appropriate).

2. Drives – forehand and backhand (with and without topspin as appropriate).

3. Push – forehand and backhand (with and without backspin as appropriate).

4. Smash – forehand and backhand (with and without spin as appropriate).

5. Lob – forehand and backhand (with and without spin as appropriate).

Striking and fielding:

Students will further develop their rounders, softball and cricket skills in full game conditions.

These sports are the extra-curricular sports for this term. All students are encouraged to attend all EC opportunities.
