Travel & Tourism Overview

Term 1 - 3: Unit 1 - The UK Travel and Tourism Sector

Have you ever thought about how many different types of tourism there are, and how important the travel and tourism sector is to the UK economy? Or about the industries within the sector, their varied roles, and how they work together? Have you considered how technology is changing the way tourists and travellers engage with the sector and its organisations? In this unit, you will gain an understanding of the range of organisations involved with different types of tourism in the UK, including their roles, how they work together and how they use technology to meet changing customer needs. This

understanding is useful for a wide range of travel and tourism jobs, including travel services, tourism services, conferences and events, visitor attractions and passenger transport.

Is based around three learning aims.

Learning aim A: Understand the UK travel and tourism sector and its

importance to the UK economy

Learning aim B: Know about the industries, and key organisations, within the travel and tourism sector, their roles and interrelationships

Learning aim C: Understand the role of consumer technology in the travel and tourism sector

Eco-tourism

Resorts that have been developed in a sustainable way

Sustainable tourism

meets the needs of tourists and local communities while protecting the natural, historical and cultural environment for the future

Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

The value of a country's economy.

Direct Employment

Jobs where employees are in direct contact with tourists and provide the tourism experience.

Indirect employment

jobs in companies that supply the direct employment companies such as aircraft suppliers and hotel laundry suppliers

Term 4-6: UK Travel and Tourism Destinations

The travel and tourism sector is one of the largest and fastest growing in the world.

An understanding of this sector is essential for anybody looking to pursue a career in

travel and tourism, and knowledge of travel geography has been identified by

employers as being a very important asset for working in the industry. Do you know the major tourist destinations in the UK? And how they appeal to different types of visitors? Can you locate major UK airports? Do you know where other gateways, such as UK seaports, are located? This unit will give you an understanding of what the UK travel and tourism industry has to offer to tourists. It will enable you to identify and locate tourist destinations, major UK airports and seaports, as well as to discover sea routes and three-letter airport codes.

Learning aim C: Plan UK holidays to meet the needs of different visitors

Resort

A town or village which is primarily a tourist destination

Honeypot

A destination that attracts thousands of visitors like swarming bees, because it is so famous

Gateway

where passengers can access a country or area. Belfast is a gateway or portal into Northern Ireland because passengers passing through here can travel on to other areas of the country easily.

Culture

The way people behave, their traditions, music and food.

Itinerary

This is the schedule of events throughout the holiday. It needs to have all the information laid out clearly for easy reference.
